Insurance Sales PsychologyDo you feel unfocused or unmotivated? You’re not alone. Burnout is on the rise, and many people are struggling with it. For sales professionals, this can lead to fewer sales and less income. Obviously, that’s not the outcome you want, so it’s time to try something new. Here’s how meditation could help you grow sales.

Burnout and Stress

It’s been a hard couple of years. The pandemic has led to economic uncertainty, major upheaval in daily routines and an increase in social isolation, not to mention worries about health and safety. The result is a massive spike in stress and burnout.

The APA’s 2021 Work and Well-Being Survey found that 79% of employees had experienced work-related stress in the previous month. For about three out of five workers, this stress had negative impacts on work, including a lack of interest, motivation, energy and effort. Additionally, about one in three reported cognitive weariness or emotional exhaustion.

People are tired. They need to recharge – and meditation can help them do that.

The Benefits of Meditation

Mayo Clinic calls meditation “a simple, fast way to reduce stress.” You don’t need special equipment or training, and the benefits can last long after your meditation session has ended.

It gets even better. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), some research indicates that meditation can reduce blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety and depression.

Mindfulness meditation may be especially beneficial. An article from the American Psychological Association lists research that suggests mindfulness meditation can improve memory, focus and cognitive flexibility, and that’s in addition to other benefits like stress reduction.

The Impact of Meditation on Sales

Meditation can help anyone, but here’s how it may be able to help sales professionals in particular:

  • Meditation may reduce stress, anxiety and depression so you can do your best at work.
  • Meditation may help you get a better night’s sleep so you have the energy to face the day.
  • Meditation may improve your memory and focus so you can get more work done.
  • Meditation may increase your cognitive flexibility so you can adapt to new situations and solve problems.

How to Get Started

If you want to use meditation as a way to boost mental health and grow sales, there’s no reason to wait. Getting started is easy.

First, you have to decide what kind of meditation you’re interested in. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are different types of meditation, including guided meditation, mindfulness meditation and yoga. You can find the type of meditation that works well for you.

The NCCIH says that the different varieties of meditation usually have four things in common:

  • A quiet place with limited distractions
  • A comfortable position
  • A focus of attention
  • An open attitude

If you haven’t tried meditation before, you might need a little guidance. You can take a class. For example, check your area for yoga classes. You can also look for a virtual class if you’d rather practice at home.

Apps can also help you learn meditation techniques. Three apps to check out are Headspace, Calm and UCLA Mindful.
