Super Bowl XLIX approaches with a dark cloud overhead that threatens the sanctity of our nation’s greatest sporting event. Every major news network over the weekend chose to lead with “DIflateGate” over other significant breaking news across the globe.
Scientists from MIT to the University of Washington altered their research schedules to study the effect of environmental conditions relating to football inflation. I wasn’t sold on the importance of this issue until Bill Nye of PBS’s The Science Guy announced he was leaving the comforts of retirement to settle this debate once and for all.
One has to wonder if the New England Patriots’ reputation will be tarnished from this latest scandal or if this will be attributed to a bunch of hot air with the media over-inflating a back-page story at best.
One thing I do know, it’s opened a door for the Spin Zoners of our industry to initiate a discussion on the importance of income protection. Social calendars will be filled on Sunday with the average Super Bowl party having 17 attendees. Over 1.25 billion chicken wings and 100 million pounds of guacamole will be consumed during the game.
The Spin Zoners will correlate deflating air pressure to deflating income resulting from an illness or injury. Whether it’s a partial occurrence from a degenerative disease such as MS to a total occurrence from an accident that could wipe out income flow immediately, the Spin Zoners will find a way to incorporate “DIflateGate” into a conversation with prospects who have never had the time or interest to discuss their income protection needs.
